Question 1

How do I organize a lot of shoes in a small reach-in closet?

Accepted Answer

Reclaim vertical air space first. Add under-shelf wire or wood risers to cut tall 14-inch shelf gaps into two 6.5-inch tiers, nest pairs heel-to-toe so each shelf holds an extra pair, use double-deck shoe slot stackers for flats and sneakers, and pack all out-of-season footwear into labeled bins on the top overhead shelf.

Question 2

Are clear plastic shoe boxes safe for leather and suede shoes?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as long as the boxes have ventilation holes in the back or door frame to allow continuous airflow. Never seal genuine leather or suede inside 100% airtight plastic containers, as trapped moisture can cause mildew or dry cracking. For expensive heritage leather boots or heels, breathable 100% cotton flannel dust bags or cedar-lined open shelves are ideal.

Question 3

What is the best way to store tall boots in a small closet so they don't flop over?

Accepted Answer

Insert lightweight cedar boot shapers, rolled cardstock, or cut segments of foam pool noodles into the boot shafts to hold them upright on a tall bottom shelf (16 to 19 inches high). Alternatively, hang them from a low closet tension rod using rubber-padded boot hanger clips so the shafts hang straight without creasing.

Question 4

Should you organize a shoe closet by color or by shoe type?

Accepted Answer

Organizing by shoe type and frequency of use is far more practical and space-efficient than organizing by color. Grouping flats with flats (5 inches tall) and boots with boots (17 inches tall) allows you to customize your vertical shelf spacing without wasting headroom. Once your shoes are grouped by category, you can sort each category from light to dark for visual neatness.

Question 5

How do I stop my shoe closet from smelling musty?

Accepted Answer

First, never put damp or freshly worn shoes straight into a closed closet—let them breathe near the door for a few hours. Second, place natural untreated aromatic red cedar blocks or activated bamboo charcoal pouches on your shoe shelves to absorb excess humidity and neutralize odors naturally without artificial perfumes.
